Open LEGO Serious Play: Use the Method Without Certification

You do not need certification to use LEGO® Serious Play®. The method is open-source, released under a community licence by the LEGO Group in 2010. This page explains what that means in practice, how to access the original documents, and how to use the method confidently without training, permission, or affiliation.

Can I use LEGO Serious Play without certification?

Yes. LEGO Serious Play is an open-source method. That means you do not need to be certified, trained, or approved by any organisation to use it.

The method was released under a community-based licence in 2010 by the LEGO Group. It includes a set of freely available documents describing how it works, how to facilitate it, and how to adapt it to different settings. These documents are public and can be used without permission or payment.

If someone tells you otherwise, they are likely trying to sell you training.

What is LEGO Serious Play?

LEGO Serious Play (LSP) is a method for structured group dialogue using LEGO bricks as a thinking tool. It is designed to help people share ideas, surface assumptions, and build shared understanding—especially in complex or ambiguous situations.

The method was developed through a partnership between LEGO and academic researchers, including Johan Roos and Bart Victor. It has since been applied in businesses, schools, community organisations, and public services. What makes it distinctive is not the bricks, but the way they are used to shape conversation.

Do I need training to do it properly?

Not legally or ethically. Training can be useful for building confidence, but it is not a requirement. No single organisation owns the method. No certifying body controls its use. Certification is a commercial product, not a licence to operate.

Many experienced facilitators learn by doing, by reading the original documents, or by adapting the method in practice. Some choose to remix the method to fit their work. Others join open communities that offer peer support rather than formal progression.

What is LSPRemix?

LSPRemix is a user-led approach to LEGO Serious Play. It supports people to use the method in their own context without seeking permission, certification, or brand alignment. It values adaptation over compliance and shared learning over formal credentials.

The name is not a product. It is a way to signal that your practice is open, transparent, and based on collective contribution.

If you use the method and want to connect with others doing the same, the hashtag #LSPRemix is open to all. No membership, no fees, no hidden rules.

Where can I find the open-source documents?

The original method documents are hosted on LEGO’s official site:

These include the core process, sample workshop flows, and guidance on facilitation. You are free to adapt them for your own use, provided you respect the terms of the community licence.

If you’re unsure how to interpret them, or want help putting them into practice, I offer support through resources, informal mentoring, and open workshops.

What if I want help without buying a course?

I work with individuals, teams, and organisations who want to explore LEGO Serious Play without going through a certification route. This includes:

  • Custom workshop design

  • Peer-led facilitation support

  • Practice mentoring for people using LSP in education, non-profits, or public service

I don’t sell certification. I support practice.

Still have questions?

You’re not alone. The LSP landscape can be confusing, especially when most search results point to commercial training offers. If you’re curious, sceptical, or just starting out, you can explore:
